Here's a list of things your owner's manuals just don't tell you, and they may save you time and money!

1. Turn it off, turn it back on.  Nine times out of ten, rebooting your computer and any equipment that connects to it will solve the problem.

2. Check the cables.  I know it sounds simple, but things come unplugged or become loose.

3. If you can’t get online, call your Internet service provider first.  Connection problems can often be checked and fixed –free.

4. Back up your data.  External hard drives with lots of memory are getting cheaper by the day and worth it if your hard drive takes a digger.  There are even secure online backup services that will save your data offsite for a small fee.

5. Give it a rest.  Turning off your computer when it’s not in use saves energy and clears out the RAM, or temporary memory, which would otherwise slow your machine over time.

6. Use “Strong” passwords.  Use a combination of letters and numbers, but not your birth date,  to create a “base” password, and adding a unique suffix for each site you use.  If your base password is your spouse’s initials and your anniversary date (SP061789), you Amazon password might be “SP061789AM.”

7. Got neighbors?  If you do, protect your home wireless network with a password.  Getting into a non-encrypted network is child’s play or for any one parking nearby with a computer access.

  Recycle Electronics

Various parts of popular electronic devices may contain dangerous heavy metals, including lead, silver, barium, cadmium, chromium and mercury.  CVWMA's electronics recycling program helps citizens properly dispose of unwanted equipment instead of landfilling them where they could cause soil, water or air contamination.
